I have recently begun to follow Paul McKenna’s I Can Teach You To Be Thin Plan.
Here are a few of my thoughts about Golden Rule 1 – When You Are Hungry, Eat!
The rules are designed to destroy the ‘starve and binge’ eating cycle. And, they work! I’ve been ‘hungry’ for the better part of 15 years. But, I can say, without hesitation, that I have been ‘full’ for the last 2 days.
In the past, I would wait until I was absolutely starving before I would eat. Some days, I’d skip breakfast and lunch and then ‘binge eat’ from supper until bedtime. Other days – ‘the good days’ – I’d eat a sensible breakfast, lunch, and dinner – and then go to bed STARVING. The next day, I’d ‘fall off the wagon’ and go right back to my bad habits.
Yesterday and today, when I was hungry, I ate. Today, I ate my first meal at 9, my second around 1, and my third at 6. I’ll probably have a snack before bed.
‘Knowing that I can eat when I am hungry’ has removed the burden of ‘worrying about when I get to eat’. Now, when I’m hungry, I go into the kitchen, fix what I want to eat, sit down at the table, say grace, and eat.
Seriously, I KNOW that I sound like a cheesy ‘infomercial’ – but this plan is working.
I plan to weigh in in the morning. Sunday morning, my weight was 257. Yikes.

Today, I’ve read your entire blog from current back to Day 1 of your start on the I Can Make You Thin plan to catch up on your posts. THIS post is what convinced me to give this a try. My husband has described the feeling of always being starving and binge eating just the way you did. When we sat down to dinner tonight, both he and my daughter (age 15) said “but, how do I know when I’m satisfied. I don’t know what that means.” Well, we’re going to give it a try.
Night One, nobody had seconds. A couple of us put half of our food away for later. We all ate slowly and thoughtfully while we talked. I feel fabulous about this step. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
